ABOUT

Jabberwocky

Fall 2021

brief

Create a book of the poem “Jabberwocky.” Each stanza should be written in a different style of calligraphy on its own page.

Bookmaking

process

I started out by experimenting with different styles of calligraphy until I had seven that I liked. Then, I selected the pages and binding method I would use. I wrote out each stanza in its chosen style on scrap paper, then cut out each word individually and arranged them on the page they would go on. Once I was satisfied, I drew guidelines in pencil on the final pages and wrote out the calligraphy. After the ink dried, I erased the pencil lines and added ink splatters to each page. I hole punched them and tied them together with twine.

reflections

Most of my design work is digital, and I generally like it that way. But something about the tactile-ness of this project really appealed to me. I think the ability to hold your finished project in your hands is one I don’t often have, so it was nice to be able to physically hold this piece.
